The women’s Olympic basketball team for the USA in Paris this summer will not include Caitlin Clark, a WNBA rookie sensation, as reported by CNN sports analyst Christine Brennan. According to Brennan, Clark’s exclusion from the team was a result of concerns about her fan reaction to limited playing time on a talented roster. USA Basketball has not yet responded to CNN’s request for comment.
The roster is expected to feature WNBA stars and past Olympic champions such as Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi, and Breanna Stewart, among others. Griner, who had a harrowing experience in Russia last year, vowed to only play basketball overseas for the Olympics after being detained in the country.
The US women’s team will play an exhibition game against Germany in London before the start of the Paris Olympics. Their group stage opponents will include Japan, Belgium, and Germany. Meanwhile, the USA women’s 3×3 team will showcase younger talent like Cameron Brink and Hailey Van Lith alongside veterans Rhyne Howard and Cierra Burdick.
3×3 basketball, in its second Olympic appearance, saw the US claim the inaugural women’s gold medal in Tokyo in 2021. The USA women’s national team has a long history of Olympic success, winning gold at seven consecutive Games since 1996.
