Can squeezing kumquats into sugarcane juice reduce sugar levels?

Many people like to mix kumquats with sugarcane juice to balance out the sweetness, but does this actually reduce the sugar content in the juice? Sugarcane juice is often combined with kumquats to enhance the flavor. The tartness of the kumquats helps to mellow out the sweetness of the sugarcane juice, making it more enjoyable to drink.

There are two common ways to mix kumquats with sugarcane juice. The first method involves juicing the kumquats along with the sugarcane to create a perfectly blended drink. This is a popular and convenient option. The second method involves cutting the kumquats and squeezing the juice into the sugarcane juice after it has been pressed. This method helps to avoid any bitter taste from the kumquat peel. It is important to not add too much kumquat juice as it can make the drink too sour.

However, adding kumquats to sugarcane juice only reduces the sweet taste and does not actually decrease the sugar content. In 100 ml of sugarcane juice, there is approximately 20g of sugar. When kumquats or ice are added, the volume of the drink increases but the sugar content remains the same. It is recommended that adults limit their sugarcane juice intake to 2 cups (about 300 ml) per day to avoid consuming excess sugar, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

It is important to consume sugarcane juice promptly after juicing if kumquats are added to avoid spoilage. Additionally, it is best to not drink sugarcane juice close to meal times. It is important to be mindful of sugar intake from other sources as well to maintain a healthy diet.
