KRANANSKA GORA, Slovenia (AFP) – Canada’s Valerie Grenier takes her first large slalom World Cup win on Saturday as Mikaela Shiffrin finishes sixth in Slovenia, matching fellow American Lindsay Vonn’s document of 82 wins. missed.
Grenier, 26, led each runs down the slopes of Kranjska Gora, main Italy’s Marta Bassino by 0.37 seconds and Slovakia’s Petra Vlova in third by 0.40 seconds.
This was the primary large slalom victory for a Canadian on the World Cup since Kathy Kleiner in 1974.
Shiffrin, chasing Vonn’s World Cup profitable document, completed sixth general, 1.33 seconds behind, after setting the fifth-fastest time within the first run and simply 18th-fastest time within the second.
She has an opportunity to match Vonn’s document when the second large slalom takes place at Kranjska Gora on Sunday.
Shiffrin leads the general World Cup standings however trails Bassino by 80 factors within the large slalom standings.
