Fairmont christened the newly-built gateway to Thomas Mahoney Sr. football field with a 35-point triumph, winning the game against Belle Plaine Tigers. The team’s quarterback, Blaze Geiger, had an impressive performance, throwing for a career-best 251 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Elijah Johnson and receiver Levi Pooley each scored two touchdowns, helping the Cardinals secure a 49-14 victory. Fairmont’s head coach, Mat Mahoney, praised the team’s balanced lineup and Geiger’s excellent game. The first half saw the Cardinals build a 42-0 lead, with many key plays from their offense and defense. Pooley, in particular, had an exceptional game with three catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns. The defense, led by Gage Borntrager, Parker Mathiason, Tyson Thate, and Caleb Chambers, put immense pressure on the Tigers’ quarterback, leading to turnovers and a safety. In another game, the Fairmont Cardinals’ junior varsity team had an impressive season-opening win over Tri-City United, with a final score of 52-0. The team’s quarterback, Joe Long, threw three touchdown passes, one of which was caught by Tavian Harvey. Harvey also made an interception and returned it for a touchdown. The team’s running back, Cole Brockmann, scored two touchdowns, while Jaron Schutz and Merritt Pomerenke each made a scoring reception. The win sets a positive tone for the junior varsity team’s season, and they will look to continue their success in future games.
