Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-Ohio), chair of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, has reached out to the editors of three major science journals – The Lancet, Science, and Nature – requesting their testimony on the relationship between their publications and the federal government. The letters were sent in preparation for a hearing titled “Academic Malpractice: Examining the Relationship Between Scientific Journals, the Government, and Peer Review” scheduled for April 16.

Wenstrup expressed concerns in his letters about the possibility of inappropriate access granted to the federal government into the scientific review and publishing process by these journals. He cited contacts between the journals and top White House health officials like Anthony Fauci and Francis Collins, although he did not refer to any specific reports or studies in the communication.

Searching for research articles related to COVID-19 on the websites of The Lancet, Science, and Nature yielded nearly 19,000 results. The Hill has reached out to these journals for comment on the issue raised by Wenstrup.

The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic continues to investigate various aspects of the COVID-19 crisis by interviewing officials and experts who were actively involved during the pandemic. Earlier this year, Anthony Fauci participated in two days of closed-door interviews with the subcommittee. Copyright 2024 Nexstar Media Inc. All rights reserved.
