Chamber Honors the Legacy of Berlusconi

The Chamber of the Camera gathered to commemorate and remember Silvio Berlusconi on the anniversary of his passing. Paolo Barelli, the leader of the Forza Italia group, spoke first and his words were met with long applause from the majority deputies, especially those from FI. Barelli expressed deep sadness at the loss of their leader and emphasized that Berlusconi’s name will always be a part of their group’s symbol and name.

He acknowledged the different political judgments surrounding Berlusconi but highlighted his impact on Italian politics, mentioning that without him, the second Republic and center-right government would not exist. Barelli also praised Berlusconi’s ability to dream of the future and shape it, despite facing significant judicial persecution.

Antonio Tajani, the Foreign Minister and secretary of Forza Italia, spoke about Berlusconi’s efforts to renew Italy during his time as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. Tajani emphasized Berlusconi’s strong connections with the United States and his defense of Europeanism and Atlanticism. He highlighted Berlusconi’s commitment to protecting national interests and respecting people from different backgrounds.

However, not all deputies shared positive sentiments about Berlusconi. Riccardo Ricciardi, a member of the M5s party, criticized Berlusconi’s legacy, particularly citing his conviction for tax fraud and his strained relationship with the judiciary. Ricciardi questioned Berlusconi’s political and liberal revolution and accused him of polluting the relationship between politics and the judiciary.

In response to the criticisms, Tajani defended Berlusconi’s political legacy, emphasizing his sense of institutions and ability to work with different political parties. He highlighted the importance of respecting political opponents and fighting ideas rather than attacking individuals. Tajani also noted Berlusconi’s participation in the last Draghi government, challenging negative moral judgments about working with the former Prime Minister.

The discussion in the Chamber reflected the complex legacy of Silvio Berlusconi, with different perspectives on his contributions to Italian politics and society. While some praised his visionary leadership and political achievements, others raised concerns about his legal troubles and impact on the political landscape. Regardless of differing opinions, Berlusconi’s legacy continues to shape Italy’s political discourse and future direction.
