Sam Altman, the former CEO of OpenAI, was abruptly fired last Friday along with former president Greg Brockman. Both are looking to regain their positions, as indicated by an announcement from Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella. Altman and Brockman had reached an agreement with Microsoft to run a new artificial intelligence laboratory for the company, but their desire is still to remain at OpenAI. Hundreds of company workers have threatened to resign if the board does not accept the return of Altman and Brockman.

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and executive of OpenAI, is among the signatories of the letter that threatened resignation. Several media outlets have reported that Sutskever was the main culprit in Altman’s dismissal due to philosophical differences in the company. Microsoft is open to Altman and Brockman either regaining their positions at OpenAI, or joining their company.
