Chicken from Canada Recognizes Letters and Numbers to Set New World Record

A Gabriola Island chicken named Lacy has set a new Guinness World Record by correctly identifying six letters, numbers, and colors in one minute. The chicken, who lives on Gabriola Island in British Columbia, accomplished this impressive feat to earn the title.

Owner Emily Carrington bought five hyline chickens last year to produce eggs, and she began training them to identify magnetic letters and numbers. Carrington shared that the chickens were trained to peck only at the specific number or letter that she taught them, ignoring all others. She noted that even when additional letters were added, the chickens would only peck at the designated letter.

Inspired by the success of her chickens, Carrington decided to attempt the Guinness World Records title for the most tricks performed by a chicken in one minute. Lacy, one of the chickens, excelled in the challenge, correctly identifying six different letters, numbers, and colors within the allotted time.

The remarkable display of skill led to the creation of a new category by Guinness World Records specifically for Lacy, highlighting her intelligence. Carrington, who documents her chicken training on her YouTube channel, The Thinking Chicken, expressed her satisfaction that the new category sheds light on the surprising capabilities of chickens. She believes that chickens are often underestimated in terms of their intelligence and hopes that Lacy’s accomplishment will encourage people to recognize the potential of animals.
