Chinese researchers have successfully performed the operation of collecting lunar samples in dark areas using robotic arms and drills, thanks to a meticulous simulation process. China’s Chang’e 6 mission to gather lunar samples is currently halfway through, with the spacecraft carrying the samples entering orbit on June 4. The process of collecting samples involves a precise coordination of science and engineering, as seen on CGTN. Operating in completely dark areas on the Moon poses unique challenges, especially since they cannot be observed from Earth.
Researcher Jin Shengyi from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation explained the rigorous process involved in preparing for this operation. The team accurately simulated the probe’s operating area, 380,000 km from Earth, using data from the Thuoc Kieu 2 relay satellite. They analyzed photographic data of the landing site, built a digital model, and then recreated the lunar surface environment at a 1:1 scale for realistic simulations. By selecting suitable sample collection locations and utilizing a smart sampling system, the team successfully collected lunar samples through a three-hour drilling operation.
The team at the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation meticulously planned and executed the operation to collect lunar samples in dark areas using robotic arms and drills. By simulating the probe’s operating area and accurately modeling the lunar surface environment, they were able to select optimal sample collection locations and successfully retrieve samples through a three-hour drilling operation. This careful coordination of science and engineering has been crucial in advancing China’s space exploration efforts.
