Chinese Officials Advise Macau to Expand Economic Diversity and Ensure National Security

The government of Macau has been urged to diversify its economy and protect national security, according to a senior Chinese official. Xia Baolong, Director General of China’s Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, made the call as part of his six requirements for the region, which also included the implementation of the “one country, two systems” principle. Macau is the largest gambling hub in the world and the only place in China where casino gambling is legal. The director’s other requirements included enhanced national pride and integration with China’s Hengqin Island. Casino operators in Macau, such as Melco Resorts and Wynn Macau, have pledged to invest $15bn in non-gaming activities over the next decade.
