Chris Paul signs with Spurs after being released by Warriors

Following his release from the Golden State Warriors on Sunday, Chris Paul has reportedly agreed to a one-year, $11 million-plus deal with the San Antonio Spurs. The Warriors waived Paul before a deadline that would have guaranteed him $30 million for next season, as they were unable to find a trade partner. Now, Paul will be joining the Spurs after spending a single season in San Francisco, where he served as a backcourt mate and backup to Stephen Curry.

Despite being 39 years old, Paul still contributes as a capable playmaker and floor general on the court. Last season, he averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.3 turnovers, and 1.2 steals per game. With his scoring abilities somewhat diminished from his prime, Paul will look to make an impact with the Spurs alongside rising star Victor Wembanyama and four-year veteran Tre Jones.

The departure of Klay Thompson from Golden State is also uncertain, as talks with the five-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion have reportedly broken down. Thompson is now exploring free agency and plans to meet with teams such as the Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers. As the Warriors seek to reshape their roster around Curry, they will need to address Thompson’s future with the team.
