On Thursday, the District 8 high school football season kicks off with a match between two of the most successful programs in City League history, Westinghouse and Perry. Westinghouse had an impressive season last year, winning the City League title and reaching the PIAA Class 2A championship game. Although they ultimately lost to Southern Columbia, they became only the second City League school to play for a state football championship. Perry, on the other hand, has a PIAA championship under their belt from 1989.
Westinghouse had a strong start to this season with a 28-0 win over Clairton in Week Zero. Their junior quarterback, Khalil Green, had an impressive performance with 160 passing yards. Perry, on the other hand, has had a tough start to the season with two losses. Their senior Julian Walker has been one of their standout players. Kickoff for the game is set for 7 p.m.
In boys soccer, defending WPIAL 3A champion Moon is currently tied for first place in their section with Montour. South Fayette is close on their heels with a 3-0-1 record. On Thursday, Moon will face off against South Fayette, while Montour will travel to Chartiers Valley. Other key games in boys soccer include Latrobe vs. Plum, Bentworth vs. Charleroi, Springdale vs. Winchester Thurston, and Carlynton vs. Serra Catholic.
In boys golf, there are two weeks remaining in the 2023 WPIAL regular season. In Section 4-3A, Peters Township is currently in first place, one game ahead of Mt. Lebanon. The two teams will face off on Thursday. In Section 2-2A, Greensburg Central Catholic holds the top spot, with Ligonier Valley close behind. Ligonier Valley will be looking to tie things up when they play against Greensburg Central Catholic.
