City partners with Ann Arbor SPARK for exciting new green business challenge

The City of Ann Arbor and Ann Arbor SPARK have come together to introduce the Ann Arbor Green Business Challenge (A2 GBC), a new initiative aimed at transforming sustainability efforts in the local business community. This program is designed to celebrate and support businesses that are dedicated to eco-friendly practices, with the goal of creating a greener and more sustainable future.

The A2 GBC is more than just a certification program—it is a movement that encourages businesses to showcase their commitment to environmental responsibility while also earning recognition and cash rewards for their efforts. By participating in the challenge, businesses can highlight their sustainability initiatives and contribute to a more environmentally conscious community.

At a recent launch event, interested businesses were provided with information about the challenge. The event featured speakers such as Rodger Bowser of Zingerman’s Delicatessen, Yahang Zhang of RRS, and Heidi Poscher of 4th Purpose Energy, who shared insights and inspiration for achieving sustainability goals.

Businesses participating in the A2 GBC will work towards sustainability across seven key categories, including energy, circular economy, water, resilience, supply chain, education, and mobility. Points are awarded based on achievements in each category, with certification levels ranging from bronze to platinum. From reducing energy consumption to promoting upcycling, businesses can earn points for a variety of sustainable practices.

Recognition and rewards are an integral part of the A2 GBC. At the end of the 4 1/2-month challenge period, all participating businesses will be recognized for their efforts. Top performers will receive cash rewards for their exceptional achievements and innovative sustainability initiatives. This program is a collaboration between Ann Arbor SPARK and Ann Arbor’s Office of Sustainability and Innovations, demonstrating a shared commitment to promoting sustainability in the community.

Businesses that are interested in participating in the Ann Arbor Green Business Challenge can fill out a form to get started. More details about the program can be found on the A2 GBC website, offering businesses the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment while also receiving recognition and rewards for their efforts.
