Syzygy Plasmonics, a clean energy company based in Houston, has recently completed successful testing of their all-electric CO2-to-fuel production technology at RTI International’s facility in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park. This technology has the potential to greatly reduce carbon emissions in transportation by converting carbon dioxide and methane into low-carbon jet fuel, diesel, and gasoline. The pilot project was sponsored by Equinor Ventures and Sumitomo Corp. of Americas.
CEO of Syzygy, Trevor Best, expressed his excitement about the project in a news release, highlighting the potential impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions from shipping, trucking, and aviation. He mentioned that at commercial scale, a typical Syzygy plant could remove the equivalent of 45,000 cars from the road by consuming nearly 200,000 tons of CO2 per year.
RTI’s director of renewable energy and energy storage, Sameer Parvathikar, commended the results of the demonstration as an important milestone in their collaboration with Syzygy. In addition to the CO2-to-fuel technology, Syzygy has also been testing their Ammonia e-Cracking™ technology, which has completed over 2,000 hours of performance testing in Houston. They are currently finalizing plans for a commercial CO2-to-fuel plant and collaborating with partners for this project.
Syzygy’s goal is to decarbonize the chemical industry, which is responsible for a large portion of industrial CO2 emissions. They are utilizing light-based technology instead of combustion to drive chemical reactions, leading the way in innovative clean energy solutions.
