Clyde Edwards-Helaire has agreed to a one-year deal to remain with the Chiefs for the 2024 season, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. The running back was selected by Kansas City with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2020 draft following their Super Bowl LIV win. In his rookie season, Edwards-Helaire had 1,100 yards from scrimmage and five total touchdowns. However, after dealing with injuries and facing strong competition from Isiah Pacheco, he fell on the depth chart in 2022.

Despite the Chiefs declining his fifth-year option last spring, Edwards-Helaire still made an impact during the team’s Super Bowl LVIII victory, recording 411 yards from scrimmage on 87 touches. Over his career, Edwards-Helaire has gained 1,845 rushing yards and scored 12 rushing touchdowns in 48 games with 32 starts. He has also contributed in the passing game, catching 89 passes for 765 yards and seven touchdowns.

In addition to retaining Edwards-Helaire, the Chiefs reportedly hosted running back J.K. Dobbins for a visit on Tuesday. It is uncertain if the signing of Edwards-Helaire will impact their pursuit of Dobbins, who recently visited with the Chargers. The backfield situation in Kansas City will be something to monitor as the team continues to shape their roster for the upcoming season.
