Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment shuts down Windsor Lake because of dangerous algae blooms

The Town of Windsor is taking precautionary measures by closing access to Windsor Lake until further notice due to harmful algae blooms confirmed by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. As a result, recreational activities on the lake such as tubing and water skiing will be restricted starting on July 3rd. However, annual motorized permit holders are still permitted on the lake during the closure, while non-motorized boaters may use their permits at their own risk, but it is highly recommended to stay out of the water. Certain amenities at Boardwalk Park, including the swim beach, dog park, and watercraft rentals, will also be closed.

Director of Parks, Recreation, & Culture Tara Fotsch stated that despite hopes of improved water quality for the Fourth of July holiday, further testing prompted the decision to close the lake according to protocol. In efforts to combat harmful algae blooms, the town introduced four new LG Sonic MPC-Buoys on Windsor Lake in May. These buoys utilize ultrasonic waves to disrupt the algae, ultimately inhibiting its growth by depriving it of the necessary sunlight.

In light of these developments, the Town of Windsor is prioritizing public safety and environmental conservation by implementing these restrictions and initiatives to address the issue of harmful algae blooms in Windsor Lake.
