During a visit to Singapore, U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted the importance of a strong U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific region for security and stability. She emphasized the need to solidify ties in the region and showcased the U.S.’ commitment to actively engage with countries in the area.
Raimondo acknowledged China’s increasing investments in the region but emphasized that the U.S. was also actively participating in the region, regardless of China’s approach. The focus, she stated, was on the United States showing up in the region and strengthening relationships with partner countries.
At the recent IPEF ministerial meeting, member countries signed a “clean economy” agreement and announced $23 billion in investment opportunities for sustainable infrastructure projects. Raimondo highlighted the importance of addressing climate objectives during bilateral meetings with partner countries to promote sustainable development.
While acknowledging countries’ trade relationships with China, Raimondo emphasized that the U.S. was not dictating their economic ties. She mentioned that the U.S. was increasing economic support in the region through technology, technical assistance, and capital, alongside international allies like those in the G7.
Raimondo raised concerns about China’s industrial overcapacity and the impact of subsidized goods in global markets. She highlighted the need for collective action as a way to address such issues and send a message to China. The U.S. remains committed to working with partners in the region to promote stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.
