China, like many other countries, considers food to be a strategic resource. While western nations debate about new food options that require fewer pesticides and less water, China, a communist dictatorship, is moving forward with genetically engineered wheat. This is a product that eco-terrorists in the US would not even allow to be grown in a contained field without causing destruction.
Environmentalists have a negative view of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), despite their lack of knowledge on the subject. They tend to label everything as a GMO, whether it is RNAi, CRISPR, or just an edit. However, genetic engineering, including creating disease-resistant crops, is seen as a way for countries to become self-sufficient in food production.
China has also approved the use of GM corn in order to reduce their reliance on imports from America. This move towards genetic engineering is important for self-sufficiency, even in poorer countries. In contrast, Europe restricts African countries from using GMOs, yet continues to import GMO products for their animal feed and export meat to Africa.
Despite concerns about GMOs, China’s organic food exports are unlikely to decrease. The “organic” label on these products may be misleading, as some of the food is actually conventional. This raises questions about the impact of organic foods on one’s health.
