VDL has successfully obtained the necessary permissions from European competition authorities for the acquisition of Van Hool, as reported by the curator of the bankrupt Belgian bus builder. This approval was a crucial step in the completion of the takeover process, with only minor legal steps remaining to be finalized by the end of the week.
The Dutch company VDL is set to acquire the bus and coach division of Van Hool after a binding offer was accepted earlier this year. In addition to approvals in Belgium and the Netherlands, permissions were also required in Sweden, Austria, and North Macedonia, all of which have been granted without any objections. The exact number of employees VDL will retain in Lier and the scope of their operations will only be determined once the acquisition is officially completed.
Christophe Van Audenhove, secretary of the liberal trade union ACLVB, expressed satisfaction with the progress made in securing jobs and providing a clear perspective for employees. Union representatives continue to engage in constructive dialogues with VDL and the company GRW, which has taken over the other division at Van Hool, to ensure a smooth transition.
GRW, a South African company partially owned by German Schmitz Cargobull, has promised to maintain a maximum of 350 jobs in Belgium in the long term. While negotiations with GRW have presented some challenges, particularly regarding changes to employment conditions, efforts are being made to reach mutually beneficial agreements. By working closely with both VDL and GRW, the unions strive to safeguard the interests of employees and facilitate a successful transition for all parties involved.
