Computer Science senior wins college award for academic engagement

Ryan Slocum, a student in the Computer Science program graduating in 2024, recently received the Academic Engagement Award from the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU Boulder. His dedication to various programs and opportunities on campus, such as the President’s Leadership Class and three internships, as well as his role as a Teaching Assistant, was recognized by his nominators. Slocum also spearheaded an initiative to map the leadership landscape at CU Boulder for the Center for Leadership, showcasing his commitment to personal growth and excellence in execution.

His nominators praised Slocum for his fearless desire to learn, intellectual humility, and ability to maintain a balanced perspective and sustainable lifestyle. Winning the award was a great honor for Slocum, who feels proud to be recognized among an esteemed group of fellow award winners within the college. He attributes his success to the support of his parents, the guidance of his professors like Dr. Angela Thieman-Dino and Dr. Paul Diduch, and the friendships he has made in the President’s Leadership Class.

Reflecting on his time at CU Boulder, Slocum believes the most important lesson he has learned is the value of trying new things, especially those that challenge and scare you. He encourages others to embrace discomfort as a means of personal growth and self-improvement. Looking ahead, Slocum has set personal and professional goals for the future. Personally, he aims to compete in a 100-mile ultramarathon, while professionally, he plans to pursue a graduate degree in robotics and work on impactful and challenging projects in the field.
