Yesterday, a public hearing was hosted by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) in Fort Wayne to address air quality concerns related to the Google Data Center. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss an application for the property that would allow for the use of backup diesel generators.

The meeting was conducted at the Ivy Tech Community College-Coliseum Campus Building and provided residents with the opportunity to submit written comments, ask questions, and express concerns about air pollution resulting from the backup generators in the permit. Many residents voiced worries about the potential health impacts of air pollutants on the community.

One local resident, Jorge Fernandez, emphasized that the health of neighbors is his primary concern and urged Google to be good neighbors while exploring alternative options to backup generators to minimize negative health effects.

While the meeting was seen as productive, public advocate Gina Burgess expressed disappointment at the limited options available moving forward. She noted that IDEM lacks the authority to regulate zoning, odor, or noise in connection with the ongoing construction, and can only consider how the project aligns with federal and state air emission laws.

During the meeting, IDEM provided a Citizens Summary clarifying their regulatory jurisdiction and outlined the steps involved in reviewing the permit application. Public comments will be accepted until July 8, and those unable to attend the meeting can submit feedback via email referencing the permit number. IDEM will review all comments before issuing a decision on the permit application.

Overall, the public hearing highlighted community concerns about maintaining air quality standards while accommodating the new Google Data Center project. Residents are encouraged to continue engaging with IDEM in the permit review process to ensure that environmental and health considerations are adequately addressed.
