The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office announced that a construction crew in Florida found an inert World War II-era bomb near a former military airfield. The discovery was made while crews were working on the construction of what will become Wilton Simpson Technical College near the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport.

Sheriff Al Nienhuis stated that because the bomb was rusted and decayed, it was impossible to determine whether it was a live munition or inert. The Brooksville Army Airfield was in operation from 1942 and was used to train pilots, ground crews, and bomb squadrons during the war.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that bomb experts from Citrus County and MacDill Air Force Base determined the bomb to be inert on Tuesday after it was unearthed near the former Brooksville Army Airfield.
