Consumer sues Poppi over questionable gut health claims

Poppi, a popular soda brand, is currently facing a class-action lawsuit filed by a consumer who believes that the products do not improve gut health as much as the marketing suggests. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in San Francisco by Kristin Cobbs, who purchased Poppi drinks multiple times based on their labels, which claim to be prebiotic sodas and promote gut health with the slogan, “Be Gut Happy. Be Gut Healthy.” However, Cobbs discovered that the drinks only contain approximately 2 grams of prebiotic agave inulin fiber, which she believes is not enough to provide any significant benefit. Research cited in the lawsuit shows that consuming 7.5 grams of agave inulin daily for three weeks was not enough to confer meaningful prebiotic benefits.

Furthermore, the lawsuit claims that consuming more Poppi to potentially receive prebiotic benefits would result in increased sugar consumption, which could outweigh any potential benefits. Cobbs is seeking monetary relief for herself and other similar customers who may have been misled by Poppi’s marketing claims. In response to the lawsuit, Poppi, based in Austin, Texas, stated that it stands behind its products and believes the lawsuit is baseless. The company is prepared to defend itself against the allegations.

Functional beverages like those produced by Poppi are part of a growing trend in the market that claims to improve health and wellness. Sales of prebiotic and probiotic drinks in the U.S. significantly increased last year, according to data from consulting firm AlixPartners. Poppi is just one of many brands in this category, aiming to cater to consumers looking for products that provide health benefits in addition to refreshment.
