Starting Monday, children and teens in Contra Costa County will have access to a dedicated psychiatric emergency unit, making it easier for them to get the help they need. This new unit will specifically cater to children between the ages of 6 and 17 who are experiencing a diagnosed psychiatric emergency. It is located at 25 Allen Street, conveniently situated near the Martinez Health Center and the Miller Wellness Center.

Operated by Pacific Clinics, the staff at the psychiatric emergency unit are equipped to provide a range of services including crisis intervention, mental health assessment, medication assistance, and therapy. They will also offer alcohol and drug screening services, case management, and peer support to ensure comprehensive care for the patients.

The primary goal of the new unit is to stabilize patients and connect them with the necessary mental health services without the need for inpatient hospitalization. Previously, children experiencing psychiatric emergencies were treated alongside adults at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center. In 2023 alone, there were 1,072 admissions for pediatric psychiatric patients at the regional medical center, the majority of whom were adolescents and teens struggling with depression and suicide risk.

With the introduction of this dedicated psychiatric emergency unit, children and teens in Contra Costa County now have a specialized space where they can receive the appropriate care and support during a psychiatric crisis. This will not only improve access to mental health services but also ensure that young patients are treated in a safe and nurturing environment.
