A writer covering the Dallas Cowboys expressed some concerns about the signing decisions made by new Commanders head coach Dan Quinn. Jerry Trotta, who writes for “The Landry Hat,” mentioned that Quinn may have overspent on free agents Dorance Armstrong and Tyler Biadasz, as well as signed 33-year-old tight end Zach Ertz who has had limited playing time in the last two seasons.
Trotta then singled out running back Austin Ekeler as a signing that he believes may already be a flop. Ekeler had mentioned that the Chargers were going in a different direction, leading him to sign with Washington. Trotta questioned Ekeler’s reasoning and expressed doubts about his ability to contribute effectively in 2024 given his age and size.
However, Trotta also acknowledged that Ekeler may not be expected to carry the ball as much as he did in previous seasons, with Brian Robinson and Chris Rodriguez taking on more of the workload. The Commanders likely intend to utilize Ekeler as a third-down back or pass-catching option rather than a workhorse runner.
Trotta concluded by asking readers if they think Quinn already regrets signing Ekeler, but he also acknowledged that it may be too early to judge. With Ekeler’s contract only spanning two years, there is still time for the Commanders to maximize his contributions without overburdening him. Trotta also considered whether his own biases against Quinn could be influencing his perspective on the signing decisions made by the Commanders.
