Large groups of people gathered in Berlin on Monday evening to protest the situation in Gaza and the Israeli army’s attacks on Rafah. The Berlin police confirmed this to the Tagesspiegel when asked. According to police reports, around 300 people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in the early evening. They chanted and waved Palestinian flags. Apart from an attempted physical attack on a press representative, the situation remained calm. Despite a criminal investigation being initiated in the case, things remained peaceful.

The speaker also confirmed a spontaneous meeting in Neukölln, although no further details were available. Videos shared on social media depicted around a hundred people chanting “Free Palestine” and “Ceasefire Now” on the corner of Pannierstrasse and Sonnenallee. Other videos show people spread around a “Rafah” lettering made from tea lights. They chanted, demanding the end of the Israeli occupation, calling Israel a terrorist state, and shouting “Stop the Genocide” and “Free Palestine”.

The protests are believed to be related to the Israeli army’s advance on Rafah, the southernmost city in Gaza. According to UN figures, 1.3 million people are currently living in the town, which had around 300,000 inhabitants before the war.
