Brennen Davis has faced challenges due to injuries in recent years, with the latest setback possibly causing him to miss a significant portion of the season, if not all of it. He sustained a fractured back and has been placed on the IL with Iowa. Davis, the Cubs’ former top prospect, was ranked as the top Cubs prospect in mid-2021 and mid-2022 by Lance Brozdowski of Marquee Sports Network.
During the 2021 season, Davis played across three levels and put up impressive numbers, with a .260/.375/.494 batting line, 19 home runs, and a standout performance in the Futures Game where he was named MVP for hitting 2 home runs. However, it was in 2022 when injuries began to take a toll on him, leading to back surgery that limited him to just 52 games with a .597 OPS and 5 home runs.
Despite a promising return to the Arizona Fall League later in 2022, injuries continued to hamper Davis in the 2023 campaign, where he hit .201 with 5 home runs in 71 games, mostly with Triple-A Iowa. This season, he showed signs of getting back on track with stellar performance in 36 games for Iowa, boasting a 138 weighted runs created plus, a .933 OPS, 10 home runs, and 26 RBIs. However, his last appearance in a game on June 11 resulted in a hitless outing with 3 strikeouts.
As he faces the latest injury setback, there is no set timeline for his return, but it is expected to be a lengthy recovery process for Davis.
