The Innovation Lab at NRF 2024: Retail’s Big Show this past January featured such creative tech solutions as smart shopping carts. One of the innovations involved a “headless checkout” concept, described by Wink CEO Deepak Jain, which allows checkout to occur anywhere with no credit card needed. The platform is device agnostic and is already in use in Asia, with plans to expand to North America.
Jain cited potential uses for grocers, such as preventing minors from purchasing age-restricted products and enabling shoppers to pick up ordered products from smart lockers. He also mentioned that one grocer had expressed interest in adopting the solution for the latter purchase.
Bold Commerce co-founder Jay Myers noted that the platform could also address the issue of cart abandonment by speeding up the transaction process, since no credit card is required to complete the order.
In response to questions about potential ways to “game the system,” Jain explained that the platform could distinguish between similar-looking people and living people versus dummies or photographs. In cases where there is doubt about a person’s identity, the solution will step up the authentication process by asking for the person’s voice.
The Innovation Lab showcased tomorrow’s tech, offering a fascinating glimpse into the future of retail.
