Cyril Ramaphosa to remain as president of South Africa

The 71-year-old Ramaphosa has been serving as president since 2018. About four months later and amid clashes on the Gaza border, South Africa returned the South African ambassador to Israel for consultations and a year later announced the return of an ambassador from Israel. In February 2022, under pressure from South Africa and Algeria, Sharon Bar-Lee, Deputy Director for Africa at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was expelled from the African Union summit. In March 2023, the Parliament of South Africa passed a resolution calling for the closure of the Israeli embassy in Pretoria.

South Africa also acted against Israel’s efforts to ally with other African countries. During the war, it was decided by the South African government to return the ambassador from Israel together with the diplomatic staff. In November of last year, the South African government appealed to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, and requested to initiate legal proceedings against Israel on the grounds that “Israel’s actions are genocidal in nature” and while mentioning statements by politicians and military personnel expressing intent to commit genocide – and demanded an interim order to suspend its actions The IDF in the Gaza Strip. In March 2024, the Foreign Minister of South Africa announced that citizens of Israel who fight in the ranks of the IDF will be arrested upon their return home.
