Dan Campbell: Safety Help Still Needed

The Lions recently made some changes to their cornerback group, signing Amik Robertson and trading for Carlton Davis. However, no safeties have been added to the mix since last season. Head coach Dan Campbell hinted at the possibility of adding more safeties during a press conference at the league meetings last week. While Kerby Joseph and Ifeatu Melifonwu are returning to the secondary in 2024, Campbell mentioned that the team is still looking to add more players at the safety position.

Campbell emphasized the need for more safety help and competition in the secondary. He mentioned that 2023 second-round pick Brian Branch has the flexibility to play safety, but has been primarily used in the slot position in Detroit. While veterans like Justin Simmons and Quandre Diggs are available in free agency, the Lions may choose to explore younger options in the upcoming draft to bolster their safety group. The team’s focus is on strengthening the safety position as they continue to evaluate their options for the upcoming season.
