De Rossi extends Roma contract to 2027

Roma’s Italian coach Daniele De Rossi has extended his contract with the club until 2027, as announced by the Serie A team on Tuesday. This extension comes as recognition for De Rossi’s impressive performance as Jose Mourinho’s replacement. In April, Roma had already stated that De Rossi would continue as the first team coach “for the foreseeable future”, with the confirmation of the three-year extension now made official.

Former Roma captain De Rossi took over as interim boss after Mourinho was sacked in January, bringing a revitalized energy to the team and guiding them to the semi-finals of the Europa League. Despite finishing sixth in Serie A last season, outside the Champions League positions, De Rossi’s impact on the team was evident. This was a disappointing conclusion to a season that had seen a turnaround under his leadership.

De Rossi’s coaching experience is limited, with his only previous managerial position lasting four months at lower-league club SPAL, ending abruptly in February of the previous year. However, the former Italian international player, who won the World Cup in 2006, is adored by Roma fans. He is seen as a local hero who came through the ranks, made his debut in 2001, and went on to become a key player in some of Roma’s most successful teams alongside Francesco Totti.

Growing up in a tough suburb of Rome, De Rossi’s passion on the field endeared him to the fans. Despite only winning two Italian Cups and the 2007 Italian Super Cup during his playing career with Roma, he left a lasting impact on the club before concluding his career at Boca Juniors in early 2020 after a brief stint in Argentina.
