Demonstrations at US universities over Gaza exacerbate rift among Democrats

The negotiations between the authorities of Columbia University and student representatives who had been camped in solidarity with Gaza for 10 days have failed, resulting in an eviction order being issued. This campus mobilization, reminiscent of protests against the Vietnam War in 1968, has become a political issue that is impacting both Democratic and Republican congressmen. The pressure from both sides is adding fuel to the agitation in Europe and the United States, which could potentially cost President Joe Biden support in the upcoming elections.

The divide among Democrats is becoming more apparent, with some congressmen demanding the dismantling of the camp at Columbia University or the resignation of the rector. The politicization of the situation is escalating, with calls to restore order coming from both Republicans and now moderate or centrist Democrats. Progressive factions, led by representatives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, are showing support for the protesters, further highlighting the division within the party.

The decision of whether to use force to evacuate the campuses remains a major concern for academic authorities, reflecting the political implications of the situation. Some donors, particularly within the Jewish community, are expressing their disapproval of the protests, threatening to withdraw funding if the mobilization continues. The issue of divesting from companies linked to Israel remains a point of contention, with Columbia announcing that it will not divest but instead invest in health and education in Gaza.

The student protests at Columbia University have sparked similar movements at other universities in the United States and in Europe, particularly in France and Germany. The ongoing protests highlight the global nature of the solidarity with Gaza, drawing support from various student groups and left-wing organizations. The situation is evolving rapidly, with arrests, clashes with police, and ongoing mobilization on campuses in response to the conflict in Gaza.
