Another exciting weekend of recruiting wrapped up for Auburn football as they hosted several commitments and pledges to other programs. Among the guests was Derick Smith, a four-star athlete from Southside High School in Selma, who is currently committed to Alabama. Smith, along with fellow Alabama commit Antonio Coleman, visited Auburn’s campus and enjoyed their time exploring the facilities.
At Alabama, Smith is projected to play wide receiver, but at Auburn, he would have the freedom to choose his position. Building relationships with wide receivers coach Marcus Davis and safeties coach Charles Kelly is crucial for Smith, as he considers his options. Kelly’s success with defensive backs at Alabama has caught Smith’s attention, and he believes that Kelly could help him achieve similar success.
Smith’s decision on whether to flip from Alabama to Auburn will likely be influenced by Auburn’s performance on the field in 2024. If the team shows improvement from their 6-7 campaign in 2023, Smith may have a difficult decision to make in December. Auburn will have another opportunity to impress Smith at Big Cat Weekend in July, giving them another chance to showcase what the program has to offer.
