Detroit Police Department joins efforts to increase awareness of men’s mental health

The Detroit Police Department is taking part in raising awareness around men’s mental health throughout the month of June. This initiative is aimed at helping men understand and address their mental health challenges and develop coping mechanisms. Men’s wellness is an often overlooked area, but Detroit police Chief James White is hoping to change that by encouraging men to seek help when needed.

Chief White emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression, that many men may struggle with. The Men’s Wellness Matters event, now in its second year, provides resources and support for men who may be facing mental health difficulties. The event includes various wellness services, from massages to eye exams, to show men that they are not alone in their struggles.

Corporal M.J. Harris highlights the holistic approach to wellness at the event, including physical and mental health services. Chief White, with a background in mental health, is working to expand mental health resources both in the city and state. The department is also introducing a crisis intervention team to respond to mental health incidents effectively.

The goal of the Men’s Wellness Matters event is to save lives and improve the quality of life for men in the community. Chief White stresses the importance of prioritizing mental health as part of overall well-being. The success of the event in 2024 indicates plans for future iterations in 2025, with a continued commitment to offering free services to all participants.
