The General Services Administration’s funding vehicle has named Larry Bafundo as the new permanent executive director, amid calls from the White House and Congress to fund the Technology Modernization Fund. Bafundo previously served as TMF’s deputy executive director and has experience leading complex digital initiatives in both the public and private sectors.

Before joining the GSA in January, Bafundo oversaw the Department of Labor’s modernization efforts and led a $2 billion initiative to upgrade unemployment insurance systems. Additionally, he worked at GSA’s 18F unit for over two years as a product manager, focusing on transformation efforts for crime data collection and reporting.

Deputy Administrator Katy Kale recognized Bafundo’s expertise and highlighted the importance of TMF in investing in IT modernization projects to enable the federal government to deliver simple, seamless, and secure services to the American public. This announcement follows calls from federal IT leaders and lawmakers to revitalize the TMF, as the program nears the end of its America Rescue Plan funding.

Bafundo’s promotion was first reported by NextGov, signaling a new chapter for the Technology Modernization Fund under his leadership. This development aligns with broader efforts to prioritize technology modernization across federal agencies to improve service delivery and efficiency for the American people.
