Google has introduced a new small business filter for search and maps, making it easier for shoppers to find products offered online by local retailers that are classified as small businesses. This will include e-commerce brands, local businesses, and sellers from marketplaces like Etsy and eBay. Supporting local and/or small businesses is important to 84% of people, according to a May 2023 Google/Ipsos survey.
In order to find a small business on Google, shoppers can look for the “small business” filter when shopping on desktop or mobile, or select the filter on “maps” on mobile when looking for local businesses. Small businesses can add the “small business” attribute to their listings in early November, and the filter will be available on Search through the filter panel year-round, according to the company’s announcement.
Google is also highlighting its “deals destination” and offering a “shop deals” feature online. In addition to this, Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) brings generative AI capabilities into search to help customers shop, and a virtual try-on tool and photorealistic image feature will be available in December.
