Does AI-Powered Dating Technology Have Bias?

Feb 13, 2024

AI and the tools powered by it are accessible to almost everyone with an internet connection, but this does not mean they were created for everyone. Jamie Cohen, PhD, an assistant professor at Queens College of the City University of New York, emphasizes that the major models used in AI are exclusive and problematic. These models are created and trained by cis white men, and the datasets used to train bots are often open-source, sourced indiscriminately from the internet.

Maria Avgitidis, CEO of Agape Match, points out that AI may socially engineer which dating profiles people view, potentially leading to discrimination based on gender or race. As AI-assisted profile curation, swiping, and chatting become more prevalent, users need to be aware of potential biases, raise red flags about it, and demand better from the companies behind the tools they engage with.
