Dr. Eric J. DeMaria appointed as Chief of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at Brody School of Medicine, ECU Health

Dr. DeMaria has recently taken on a new role as the chair of the Department of Surgery for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) and chief of surgery for ECU Health. In this position, he will be responsible for developing strategies to deliver surgical services across the system, ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of high-quality surgical services, and recruiting surgeons to meet the needs of the community. Additionally, Dr. DeMaria will oversee graduate medical programs, academic pursuits in surgery, and the ECU Health Physicians Surgeons.

Having received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completing general surgery training at Brown University, Dr. DeMaria brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously served on the faculty at the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he established one of the first Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) fellowship training programs. His other appointments include positions at Duke University, WakeMed, Maryview Medical Center, and Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in various capacities related to bariatric surgery.

Dr. DeMaria is well-known internationally for his contributions to bariatric surgery, advanced laparoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery. He has published extensively, speaks at conferences, and holds leadership positions in various societies, boards, and committees around the world. Dr. DeMaria is excited to continue bringing high-quality care to eastern North Carolina and looks forward to collaborating with the talented surgeons, care teams, professors, and students who share his dedication to meeting the surgical needs of the region.
