Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy has been vocal about the issue of gun violence in the United States, referring to it as an epidemic. In a major step forward, he has now declared gun violence a public health crisis. In a recent advisory report issued on Tuesday morning, Dr. Murthy detailed the various consequences that gun violence has on the health and wellbeing of the country. Specifically, the report highlighted the impact that gun violence has on children, communities, and families.

According to statistics, gun violence is the leading cause of death among children and adolescents in the United States. More than half of adults surveyed reported that either they or their family members have experienced gun violence in some form, whether it be through the loss of a family member, witnessing a shooting, or firing a gun themselves. Nearly six out of ten adults expressed concern about their loved ones falling victim to gun violence.

The effects of growing gun violence are being felt by communities across the Triangle area in North Carolina. Over the weekend, Raleigh experienced three separate shootings, resulting in a total of six people being injured. These incidents took place at various locations, including two outside shopping centers. As gun violence continues to plague communities, it is clear that urgent action is needed to address this public health crisis.
