During a march on the Near North Side, a coalition calls for action on youth mental health and gun violence in Illinois.

Dozens gathered on the Near North Side of Chicago on Saturday to advocate for the well-being of young people in Illinois. The Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership (CSPL) organized a march to urge lawmakers to address various challenges faced by young people in Chicago and throughout the state. Issues such as limited access to mental healthcare and exposure to gun violence were highlighted during the event.

CSPL members emphasized that their organization is rooted in the pursuit of justice. Rita Cardoso, a board member of CSPL, mentioned that they collaborate with parishes, nonprofits, and unions to advocate for additional services for youth. The recent rally was prompted by the loss of many young lives to gun violence, such as the tragic death of 9-year-old Ariana Molina in April.

In response to the needs of high-risk communities, CSPL is working to increase youth services in areas like Back of the Yards. Mental health resources are considered a crucial aspect of their efforts, especially in regions where youth suicide rates are elevated, like the Proviso area where Proviso East and Proviso West are located.

The focus on investing in programs and activities for young people aligns with Mayor Brandon Johnson’s summer safety plan. CSPL President of the Board of Directors, Anthony Williams, expressed anticipation for further collaboration with Mayor Johnson, who has pledged to work with the organization.
