E. coli contamination possible in products

A public health alert has been issued for nearly 43,000 pounds of ground beef that was produced in March and shipped to retail locations nationwide due to concerns about possible E. coli contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service is warning consumers not to consume these products.

The issue was discovered by the Greater Omaha Packing Co., which found that a portion of the beef had tested positive for E. coli. The contaminated beef was inadvertently used to produce ground beef products that were then shipped into commerce. The affected products were produced on March 28, 2024, with a packaging date of “032824” and a use/freeze by date of April 22, 2024. These products can be identified by the establishment number “EST. 960A” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

As of now, no confirmed reports of illness from consuming the beef have been reported. However, anyone who is concerned about potential illness is advised to contact their healthcare provider. Symptoms of E. coli contamination can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, pain, tenderness, nausea, and vomiting.

It’s important to note that there is no recall for these products since they are no longer available for purchase. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for any ground beef products that match the description provided by the Food Safety and Inspection Service. Anyone in possession of these products should not consume them and should instead dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase.
