A research project in East Sussex is exploring how technology can improve the wellbeing of older adults. The Living Lab initiative aims to see if digital tools can enhance the mental and physical health of elderly individuals. The 12-month trial project will help inform decisions made by East Sussex County Council regarding adult social care services and public health commissioning in the region.

The project was launched at a sheltered housing facility in Peacehaven, where an interactive digital games table was installed. This ‘Magic Table’ uses light projections to offer residents physical, social, and cognitive activities such as puzzles, games, and tactile challenges. Virtual reality headsets are also available to provide residents with virtual day trips and experiences.

Mark Stainton, director of adult social care and health at the council, expressed hope that residents would enjoy the innovative project. The feedback gathered during the pilot scheme will help the council, University of Brighton, and NHS Sussex understand how internet-connected devices can benefit the health of older people. The project aims to demonstrate the positive impact technology can have on the quality of life for elderly individuals.

Residents participating in the project can also opt to have heat sensor fall monitors installed in their apartments or use a sports Smartwatch to monitor their health. The use of technology is expected to support carers by providing opportunities for conversation and interaction between clients and care providers. The pilot project is a collaborative effort involving the council, NHS Sussex, and the University of Brighton.

Dr. Theo Fotis, lead researcher at the University of Brighton, highlighted the importance of the Living Lab concept for testing technologies in a real-world setting. The project seeks to gather insights directly from residents themselves to inform the development of technology solutions that can benefit older adults in the community.
