During Wednesday’s matchup between the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils, tensions quickly escalated into all-out violence as the game opened. A line brawl erupted right after the puck drop at Madison Square Garden, resulting in eight players being ejected after receiving fighting majors. The ejected Rangers players were Jacob Trouba, Matt Rempe, K’Andre Miller, and Barclay Goodrow, while John Marino, Chris Tierney, Kurtis MacDermid, and Kevin Bahl were ejected for the Devils. Curtis Lazar and Jimmy Vesey also received fighting majors but remained eligible to play as they were considered the “first fight.”

Rempe and McDermid engaged in a heated clash that was perhaps the most entertaining of the fights. This was not Rempe’s first encounter with the Devils, as he had previously been ejected from all three games in which he faced them. The bad blood between the teams led to a confrontational moment between Rangers head coach Peter Laviolette and Devils interim coach Travis Green on the bench, with both coaches seen yelling and cursing at each other.

This incident was not isolated, as there had been previous altercations between the teams in games leading up to this matchup. Laviolette had hinted at the intensity of division games, which often lead to more competitive and tense matchups. The animosity between the teams may have been fueled by Rempe’s actions in previous encounters, including elbowing Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler and hitting forward Nathan Bastian in previous games.

Overall, the Rangers and Devils engaged in a physical game that resulted in five fights within the first two seconds of play. This level of aggression was significant, marking the most fights in an NHL game since a matchup between the Rangers and Washington Capitals in 2021. The intensity of the rivalry between the Rangers and Devils was evident, with emotions running high on both sides as the game unfolded.
