In a recent report from Argentine military officials, it was mentioned that the Argentine army is set to receive upgraded 2CA2 tanks from Elbit starting in September. These tanks were produced in a joint venture between Argentina and Germany from 1979 to 1995. The collaboration with Elbit for tank upgrades began in 2010, with Argentine companies involved in the project implementation. A budget of 30 million dollars was approved for 74 tanks, with contracts signed in July of the previous year.

The tank upgrades started in late 2023 and are expected to run until 2027. However, due to Argentina’s economic challenges, additional funding may be required in the 2025 and 2027 budgets to complete the project. During a recent event attended by President Millay, Defense Minister Luis Petrie confirmed that the tanks would start arriving this year. Millay also expressed interest in increasing the number of tanks to be upgraded to 50 more.

The upgrades, led by Elbit and local partner IMPSA, focus on improving identification systems, intentions, attack capabilities, and overall tank protection. Technologies such as the E-Laws threat detection system and COAPS-L electro-optical sensing system are being integrated into the tanks to enhance their capabilities. Additional protection options, such as Israeli-made protection from IMI, are also being considered for installation on the tanks.
