Electric sports car breaks record with fast 10-80% recharge in under five minutes

A prototype of an electric sports car with new batteries has achieved an impressive charging speed of going from 10% to 80% in less than five minutes. This charging speed is twice as fast as vehicles currently on the roads. Developed by Nyobolt, a spin-off company from the University of Cambridge, these batteries do not suffer from the degradation issues associated with lithium-ion batteries.

The first working Nyobolt EV prototype is undergoing testing to validate the company’s battery performance in a high-output environment. Nyobolt has utilized its proprietary carbon and metal oxide anode materials, low-impedance cell design, integrated power electronics, and software controls to create high-energy-density batteries and charging systems. These batteries support the electrification of applications like heavy-duty off-road trucks, electric vehicles, robotics, and consumer devices.

Testing using 350kW (800V) DC fast chargers has shown that the Nyobolt EV’s battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just four minutes and 37 seconds, with a full charge providing a range of 250 kilometers. Independent testing has confirmed that Nyobolt’s batteries are durable and sustainable, capable of over 4,000 rapid charge cycles or 965,000 kilometers while maintaining over 80% battery capacity retention.

The compact size of the battery pack makes energy-efficient electric vehicles more affordable and resource-friendly. Nyobolt’s battery assembly plans could be in low-volume production within a year, with the potential to ramp up to 1,000 packs by 2025. Nyobolt’s technology, based on a decade of battery research, focuses on delivering ultra-fast charging without impacting battery life through low-impedance cells and advanced anode materials.

Nyobolt is currently in discussions with eight vehicle manufacturers about adopting its technology. In addition to automotive applications, Nyobolt’s fast-charging technology will be utilized in robotics this year.
