The Marubo tribe, located along the Ituí River in the Amazon rainforest, has been isolated from the rest of the world for centuries. Recently, the tribe gained access to high-speed internet thanks to the donation of 20 Starlink antennas from American entrepreneur Allyson Reneau. Previously only reachable after a week’s travel through harsh terrain, the tribe’s approximately 2,000 members are now connected to the digital world, experiencing both the benefits and challenges of the internet.
While internet access allows for easy communication with emergency services, tribal leaders are concerned about the exposure of young people to inappropriate content such as pornography. This exposure is leading to behavioral changes, including more aggressive sexual attitudes among young men, which goes against the conservative traditions of the tribe. For centuries, the Marubo people have had their own specific language and spiritual practices, such as taking “ayahuasca” to connect with the spirits of the forest.
Alfredo Marubo, the leader of the tribe, shared his concerns about the negative impacts of internet use on the youth and the breakdown of real communication within families. The addictive nature of digital devices and exposure to inappropriate content are altering the social and cultural fabric that has kept the tribe together for generations. Educational psychologist Stefano Rossi believes that this situation reflects a broader issue of alienation in society, where technology disconnects us from real relationships and influences behavior, especially in adolescents.
As the Marubo tribe navigates the challenges of internet access, it serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining cultural traditions and values in the face of technological advancements.
