Utah, also known as the “Beehive State,” is a place of stunning landscapes and lively communities. Despite this, like many other areas, Utah faces challenges in achieving LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion. According to a Gallup poll conducted in 2017, around 4.5% of the population identifies as LGBTQ+, which means roughly 150,000 Utah residents fall under this umbrella. While strides have been made towards greater inclusion, LGBTQ+ small business owners in Utah and across the country still encounter unique obstacles in their entrepreneurial journeys. These businesses make a significant contribution to the economy, with the National LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce reporting an estimated $1.7 trillion in economic impact annually.

It’s vital for us to actively engage with LGBTQ+ owned small businesses and support the community year-round. There are several ways to do that:

One of the best ways to support LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs is to visit and shop with LGBTQ+ owned small businesses. By intentionally opting to support these businesses, we can contribute to their success and promote a more inclusive economy.

We can use social media and word-of-mouth to promote LGBTQ+ owned businesses. By amplifying their voices and promoting their products and services, we encourage others to do the same.

Connecting with LGBTQ+ business networks is an excellent way to help entrepreneurs and provide access to resources like mentorship programs and networking opportunities. By actively participating, we can facilitate growth and empowerment for LGBTQ+ small business owners.

Volunteering and collaborating with these businesses by donating our skills, expertise, and resources can make a huge difference. Contributing to projects and offering free services can all aid in the success of LGBTQ+ owned small businesses.

Lastly, supporting inclusive policies including non-discrimination policies and equal rights for LGBTQ+ individuals is crucial. Encouraging the adoption of inclusive practices and supplier diversity programs can create more opportunities for LGBTQ+ owned businesses.

Every PRIDE month, it is essential to celebrate the achievements of LGBTQ+ small businesses and support LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs actively. We must unite as allies for an inclusive environment where all entrepreneurs can thrive. Marla Trollan, the Utah Regional Director for the US Small Business Administration, advocates for this message.
