Despite all the talk of a turnaround, England has only managed to beat one Test-playing nation at this World Cup, which was West Indies. However, their win against the co-hosts was a clinical, eight-wicket defeat, breaking the unbeaten streak of West Indies in their previous eight T20 matches. This victory was considered England’s best white-ball performance since winning the T20 title in 2022, securing their spot in the tournament even after a narrow loss to South Africa in the following game.

During the crucial moments of the match, Jofra Archer and Adil Rashid played an important role by conceding only four runs and a single while each taking a wicket in the 16th and 17th overs. Phil Salt then showcased an outstanding performance by hitting 87 not out in the chase of 181 runs, showing composure under pressure and also displaying his aggressive side by scoring 30 runs in a single over.

After the match, Salt credited the advice given by Kieron Pollard, a former West Indies World Cup winner who is part of the backroom staff at the tournament. Pollard, known for his calm demeanor and experience in winning five Indian Premier League titles, has had a significant influence on the team, despite maintaining a low profile during the tournament. Players have described him as having an “aura,” with Jos Buttler mentioning how Pollard’s composed attitude during adverse weather conditions against Namibia helped in the team’s tactical discussions.

Buttler emphasized Pollard’s experience and laid-back approach, stating that his presence has been beneficial in managing unexpected situations during matches. Pollard’s influence has been acknowledged by the team, showcasing the importance of having experienced players in the backroom staff during high-pressure tournaments.
