The Final Four of the Women’s NCAA tournament featuring South Carolina, Iowa, UConn, and NC State is set to take place. Tony Anderson analyzes the major storylines surrounding the tournament.

In a highly anticipated Elite Eight matchup between Iowa and LSU, 12.3 million viewers tuned in to watch, making it the most-viewed women’s college basketball game on record and the most-watched college basketball game ever on ESPN platforms. Iowa emerged victorious with a score of 94-87, denying LSU a chance at a second consecutive championship.

Last year, LSU defeated the Hawkeyes with a score of 102-85, setting the previous record for viewership with an average of 9.9 million and peaking at 12.6 million. This year’s game peaked at 16.1 million viewers, marking the second-highest audience for any basketball game on ESPN since 2012.

ESPN reported that this year’s Women’s Elite Eight games were the most-watched on record. In addition to the Iowa-LSU matchup, USC-UConn, Oregon State-South Carolina, and NC State-Texas also drew impressive viewership numbers.

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark had a standout performance in the Elite Eight game, scoring 41 points with 12 assists and seven rebounds. She was named the Albany 2 Regional Most Outstanding Player and set records for career 3-pointers and NCAA Tournament all-time assists. Clark’s nine 3-pointers in the game tied a single-game tournament record.

In the Final Four, Iowa will face UConn, who defeated USC in the Portland 3 Regional. The last time these two teams met in the tournament was in the 2021 Sweet 16, where UConn emerged victorious. Paige Bueckers and Caitlin Clark were standout players in that game.
