Kidney function is evaluated through tests such as blood urea, blood creatinine, blood formula, electrolytes, urinalysis, and abdominal ultrasound. BS.CKII Ho Tan Thong, from the Department of Nephrology – Dialysis at Tam Anh General Hospital, explains that these tests help assess the kidneys’ ability to filter blood and eliminate waste, aiding in the early detection of kidney abnormalities.

Kidney function tests include a blood count test, blood urea nitrogen test, blood creatinine test, glomerular filtration rate test, urine analysis test, urinary microalbumin/creatinine ratio test, electrolyte test, and abdominal ultrasound. These tests provide valuable information about kidney health and function, helping doctors identify potential issues before clinical symptoms manifest.

The blood urea nitrogen test measures waste product levels from protein breakdown, with high levels indicating poor kidney function. The blood creatinine test evaluates waste product levels excreted through the kidneys, with elevated levels suggesting impaired kidney function. The glomerular filtration rate test assesses blood filtering capacity, with results indicating kidney health.

Urine analysis tests provide insights into various health conditions, including kidney-related diseases, diabetes, and urinary tract infections. The urinary microalbumin/creatinine ratio test is essential for detecting early signs of kidney damage, especially in individuals with diabetes or high blood pressure. Electrolyte tests help maintain a balance of electrically charged chemicals in the body, crucial for muscle and nerve function.

Abdominal ultrasounds are used to detect kidney abnormalities like hydronephrosis, tumors, or kidney stones that may impact kidney function. Depending on the specific case, additional tests like kidney scans, biopsies, or MRIs may be necessary to further assess kidney health. Regular kidney function tests are vital for monitoring kidney health and addressing potential issues promptly.
